About the Artist
Franz Marc (1880–1916) was a German painter and co-founder of Der Blaue Reiter alongside Wassily Kandinsky. He painted animals almost exclusively, not from a naturalist impulse but a spiritual one. He believed animals were closer to an essential truth than humans, and he used color to express that belief directly. Blue for the masculine and spiritual. Yellow for the feminine and gentle. Red for matter, which had to be opposed. The horses and deer and foxes he left behind remain some of the most emotionally direct paintings of the twentieth century. He was thirty-six when he made the last of them.
