About This Piece

Jankel Adler was a Polish-Jewish painter who worked in Germany in the 1920s and was influenced by Picasso on trips to Paris. In 1940 he came to Scotland with the Polish army, and in 1943 he settled in London, where he became an important influence on a younger generation of British painters. This 1946 Abstract Composition comes from those London years: bold, interlocking forms in salmon, teal, mustard, and deep red, painted with the textured, earthy surface Adler was known for.

The salmon, teal, and mustard palette is warm and sophisticated, ideal for a living room, office, or dining room. It looks beautiful against warm white, terracotta, or deep teal walls and pairs well with other mid-century abstracts.

About the Artist

Jankel Adler (1895–1949) was a Polish-Jewish painter who spent his life moving. From Łódź to Düsseldorf to Paris to Glasgow, always one step ahead of what Europe was becoming. He studied alongside Paul Klee and absorbed the language of European modernism without losing the visual world he came from: folk imagery, Jewish symbolism, figures that carry weight. His surfaces are built up, almost sculptural. He never resolved the tension between those two inheritances, and that unresolved quality is what makes the work stay with you.
