About This Piece

Amphitrite was the Greek goddess of the sea, and Raoul Dufy returned to her again and again in his later work. In this 1939 seaside scene, she appears as a nude figure on the shore among sailboats and beach visitors, all drawn in quick ink line over loose washes of his signature blue. Dufy grew up by the sea in Le Havre, and this mix of myth and an ordinary day at the beach is pure Dufy: light, joyful, and full of movement.

About the Artist

Raoul Dufy (1877–1953) was a French painter who developed one of the most immediately recognizable styles of the twentieth century: loose, calligraphic line laid over fields of color that don't quite stay inside the drawing. He painted regattas, racetracks, concert halls, and the light of the Côte d'Azur with a speed and lightness that looked effortless and wasn't. He spent years working as a textile designer for Paul Poiret, and that decorative sensibility never left his canvases. Joy was not incidental to his work. It was the point.
