About This Piece

Horses and riders run all through Wassily Kandinsky's work in the years around 1912, the year he and Franz Marc published the Der Blaue Reiter almanac in Munich. Here a bold black horse surges across fields of red, blue, and green, the shapes loosening into pure color and movement. Kandinsky believed color could work on the viewer the way music does, and you can feel him pushing the familiar rider motif toward the full abstraction he would soon be known for.

The strong primaries and black give it real presence above a sofa, desk, or console. It suits modern and eclectic rooms, looks sharp in a black frame, and pairs well with the 1911 Blue Rider cover for a matched set.

About the Artist

Wassily Kandinsky (1866–1944) was a Russian painter and theorist who became one of the first artists to make fully abstract work. He came to painting late, abandoning a law career in his thirties after seeing a Monet haystack show in Moscow. He studied in Munich, taught at the Bauhaus, and wrote extensively about color and form as a language separate from representation. He believed painting could work the way music does, directly, without translation.
