About This Piece

Between 1908 and 1910, Alexej von Jawlensky spent his summers in Murnau, a small market town in the Bavarian foothills, painting side by side with Wassily Kandinsky, Gabriele Münter, and Marianne von Werefkin. Those summers changed all four of them. In this 1910 landscape, a dark blue mountain rises over a bright green meadow and a cluster of small village buildings, under a sky of pink and teal. The color is pure feeling, the moment Jawlensky became the painter he's remembered as.

The deep blue and fresh green suit living rooms, bedrooms, and mountain or lake homes, and look great against white, sage, or navy walls. It pairs beautifully with other expressionist landscapes, including Jawlensky's Landscape with Bridge.

About the Artist

Alexej von Jawlensky (1864–1941) was a Russian-born painter who trained as a military officer before abandoning that life entirely for art. He landed in Munich in 1896 and spent decades in dialogue with Kandinsky, Matisse, and the German Expressionists, absorbing their color and pushing it further. His faces became more distilled with each decade, until they were almost icons. By the end of his life, arthritis had made painting difficult, so he worked smaller and smaller. He never stopped.
