About This Piece

Edvard Weie was a Danish painter who belonged to no movement and followed his own path, growing steadily more abstract and more devoted to color over his career. In Still Life with Potted Plant, a green plant and an overturned brown pot with orange fruit sit against a red architectural form, all painted in loose, gestural strokes of pink, blue, and white. It feels spontaneous and bright, like a corner of a sunlit room.

The mix of red, green, and soft pink is cheerful and warm, perfect for a kitchen, dining room, or plant-filled living space. It pairs well with white walls, natural wood, and other modern still lifes.

About the Artist

Edvard Weie (1879–1943) was a Danish painter who came to art late, working as a house painter and newspaper deliverer before gaining entry to the Kunstnernes Frie Studieskoler in Copenhagen at twenty-five. He studied under Kristian Zahrtmann and found his footing as a painter on the remote island of Christiansø, where he spent part of every year from 1911 to 1920 and where he met the Swedish painter Karl Isakson. His work is luminous and quietly radical within the Danish tradition, color and light pushed further than his contemporaries tended to go. He received the Eckersberg Medal in 1925.
