About the Artist
Józef Pankiewicz (1866–1940) was a Polish painter who brought Impressionism back to Poland from Paris in 1890 and was met largely with hostility for it. He kept going. He was appointed professor at the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts and later directed its Paris branch, where he shaped a generation of painters known as the Kapists, or Colourists, who pushed Polish art away from its Romantic tradition toward light and color. His students included Moïse Kisling and Alice Halicka.
