About This Piece

Józef Pankiewicz was one of the most influential Polish painters of his time and knew the French painter Pierre Bonnard well. When World War I broke out he was in France, and he spent the war years living in Spain, mostly in Madrid. This still life comes from that period: a blue pitcher and a bowl of grapes, apple, and bananas on a vibrant red patterned tablecloth, in rich, saturated color. Later, as a teacher, he led a whole generation of Polish painters to Paris.

The bold red and blue make it a lively choice for a kitchen, dining room, or breakfast nook. It pairs well with white or cream walls, warm wood, and other colorful still lifes.

About the Artist

Józef Pankiewicz (1866–1940) was a Polish painter who brought Impressionism back to Poland from Paris in 1890 and was met largely with hostility for it. He kept going. He was appointed professor at the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts and later directed its Paris branch, where he shaped a generation of painters known as the Kapists, or Colourists, who pushed Polish art away from its Romantic tradition toward light and color. His students included Moïse Kisling and Alice Halicka.
