About This Piece

Egon Schiele was only eighteen in 1908, a student at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts who had recently met Gustav Klimt and was finding his own voice. In Standing Girl, a young woman in a blue dress, purple boots, and a blue beret is seen from behind, her figure drawn in nervous, confident line with warm terracotta tones on a tan ground. It's an early look at the expressive line that would make Schiele one of the defining artists of Viennese modernism.

The warm tan and blue tones suit bedrooms, dressing rooms, and entryways, and look lovely against cream, blush, or warm white walls. It pairs well with other figure drawings and works beautifully in a thin black or brass frame.

About the Artist

Egon Schiele (1890–1918) was an Austrian painter who studied under Gustav Klimt and quickly moved somewhere Klimt never went. His figures are angular, exposed, and unidealized in a way that still reads as radical. He drew and painted the body as something that carries experience rather than conceals it. He was extraordinarily prolific for someone who died at twenty-eight, leaving behind hundreds of paintings and thousands of drawings. He died in the influenza pandemic, three days after his wife. He had just been offered a major studio in Vienna.
