About the Artist
Egon Schiele (1890–1918) was an Austrian painter who studied under Gustav Klimt and quickly moved somewhere Klimt never went. His figures are angular, exposed, and unidealized in a way that still reads as radical. He drew and painted the body as something that carries experience rather than conceals it. He was extraordinarily prolific for someone who died at twenty-eight, leaving behind hundreds of paintings and thousands of drawings. He died in the influenza pandemic, three days after his wife. He had just been offered a major studio in Vienna.
