About This Piece

Sphere is one of the most important paintings Theo van Doesburg ever made. Painted around 1916, it's considered his first fully abstract work: nothing here comes from the visible world, only overlapping circles and ovals in muted blue, lavender, purple, and olive. A year later he founded the De Stijl movement with Piet Mondrian, and the ideas about space he was testing here fed straight into it. The original is in Museum De Lakenhal in Leiden, the Netherlands.

The soft purples and blues are calm and sophisticated, ideal for bedrooms, offices, and living rooms with grey, lilac, or white walls. It pairs beautifully with geometric and mid-century pieces and holds its own at larger sizes.

About the Artist

Theo van Doesburg (1883–1931) was a Dutch artist, architect, and theorist who founded De Stijl in 1917 alongside Piet Mondrian and launched the journal that gave the movement its name. He believed that art should strip itself down to horizontal and vertical lines, primary colors, and the relationships between them. Then, characteristically, he broke his own rules, introducing the diagonal and falling out with Mondrian over it. He designed buildings, typography, interiors, and stained glass with the same convictions he brought to painting.
