About the Artist
Christian Rohlfs (1849–1938) was a German painter who spent decades working in a realist tradition before discovering Post-Impressionism and Expressionism in his fifties and remaking himself entirely. He became close with Karl Ernst Osthaus, the collector and patron who supported him at the Folkwang Museum in Hagen, and the late work that emerged there is vivid, loose, and completely alive. He kept painting into his eighties. The work from those final decades is some of the freest he ever made.
