About This Piece

Christian Rohlfs was nearly sixty when he discovered Expressionism, and he kept painting until his death at eighty-eight. Flowers were a favorite subject of his later years. In Slipper Flower, painted in 1919, a potted plant with golden yellow blooms glows against a deep blue background, all in loose, gestural brushwork. It's simple, joyful, and full of light, the work of a painter who never stopped experimenting.

The yellow and deep blue pairing is bright and cheerful, perfect for a kitchen, breakfast nook, entryway, or bedroom. It looks beautiful against white or navy walls and pairs well with other floral and still life prints.

About the Artist

Christian Rohlfs (1849–1938) was a German painter who spent decades working in a realist tradition before discovering Post-Impressionism and Expressionism in his fifties and remaking himself entirely. He became close with Karl Ernst Osthaus, the collector and patron who supported him at the Folkwang Museum in Hagen, and the late work that emerged there is vivid, loose, and completely alive. He kept painting into his eighties. The work from those final decades is some of the freest he ever made.
