About the Artist
Arthur Dove (1880–1946) was an American painter widely considered the first to make purely abstract art in the United States. He worked mostly outside New York, on a boat, on a farm, and the land and water showed up directly in his shapes, even when the shapes weren't showing anything. He spent most of his career without commercial success or institutional backing. He kept working anyway.
