About This Piece

Arthur Dove painted Silver Ball, Barge, and Trees in 1930, while he was living and working on the water off Long Island. A swirling green tree rises over a small building and a band of earthy landscape, with flecks of color scattered through the scene. Dove often made small watercolors like this one straight from what he saw, then pushed them toward abstraction. The original, a small work in watercolor, gouache, ink, and charcoal, is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Alfred Stieglitz Collection.

Its greens and earth tones feel at home in coastal and lake houses, home offices, and rooms full of plants and natural light. It pairs well with oak frames, linen, and other American modernist prints, and suits anyone who wants abstract art that still feels rooted in nature.

About the Artist

Arthur Dove (1880–1946) was an American painter widely considered the first to make purely abstract art in the United States. He worked mostly outside New York, on a boat, on a farm, and the land and water showed up directly in his shapes, even when the shapes weren't showing anything. He spent most of his career without commercial success or institutional backing. He kept working anyway.
