About This Piece

Maximilian Reinitz was a Viennese painter and member of the Hagenbund, one of Vienna's most progressive artist groups between the wars. He painted Red Roofs in 1927: a hillside village of red rooftops tucked against dark green hills, with teal water in the foreground, all built from crisp, interlocking Cubist planes. The original, oil on canvas, is in the collection of the Belvedere in Vienna.

The red, green, and teal palette is warm and grounded, great for a living room, kitchen, or study. It looks beautiful against cream, olive, or warm white walls and pairs well with other European townscapes and landscape prints.

About the Artist

Maximilian Reinitz (1872–1935) was an Austrian painter who studied in Munich before traveling through Europe and eventually settling in Vienna, where he became a member of the Hagenbund. He worked in a Cubist mode while remaining open to the broader currents of European modernism. A 1922 exhibition drew such hostile reviews from conservative critics that he withdrew from public life for a period. He won civic prizes in Vienna in 1927 and 1930, recognition that arrived quietly after years of working against the grain.
