About the Artist
Maximilian Reinitz (1872–1935) was an Austrian painter who studied in Munich before traveling through Europe and eventually settling in Vienna, where he became a member of the Hagenbund. He worked in a Cubist mode while remaining open to the broader currents of European modernism. A 1922 exhibition drew such hostile reviews from conservative critics that he withdrew from public life for a period. He won civic prizes in Vienna in 1927 and 1930, recognition that arrived quietly after years of working against the grain.
