About This Piece

In the 1920s Edvard Munch was living at Ekely, his estate outside Oslo, where models came to pose and he painted and drew them freely and often. This loose watercolor shows a reclining woman with long dark hair, built from quick washes of amber, purple, and red on a pale ground. It's intimate and unhurried, a world away from the anxious intensity of The Scream, and shows how much Munch could say with just a few strokes.

The warm amber and purple washes suit bedrooms, dressing rooms, and bathrooms, and look lovely against white, blush, or warm neutral walls. It pairs well with thin black or brass frames and other loose figure studies.

About the Artist

Edvard Munch (1864–1944) was a Norwegian painter and printmaker whose work mapped the interior life with an intensity that influenced almost everything that came after it. He returned to the same subjects repeatedly. Anxiety, desire, grief, the body. As if painting them again might resolve something. His prints are as important as his paintings. He made over 700 of them, working in etching, lithography, and woodcut, and the woodcuts in particular have a rawness that feels completely contemporary.
