About This Piece

Mikuláš Galanda is one of the founders of modern Slovak art. Working in the 1920s and 30s, he brought expressionism and cubism to Slovakia and was known for tender, often melancholy images of women and motherhood. Mother, from 1932, is an unexpected close-up: a clenched hand holding something small and precious, painted in warm flesh tones against a deep crimson-magenta ground. It's intimate and protective, about love shown through a single gesture.

The deep crimson ground makes it a bold, moody piece for a living room, hallway, or study. It looks striking against white or dark walls and pairs well with black frames and other expressive figurative prints.

About the Artist

Mikuláš Galanda (1895–1938) was a Slovak painter and graphic artist who helped lay the foundation for modern art in Slovakia. He studied in Budapest and Prague, absorbing Expressionism and Czech modernism before bringing both back to a context that had almost no established avant-garde tradition. He worked across painting, illustration, and printmaking with equal focus. He died at 43, leaving behind a body of work that his country is still catching up to.
