About This Piece

Adolf Hölzel was one of the first painters anywhere to move into pure abstraction, and as a teacher at the Stuttgart Academy he shaped students like Johannes Itten and Oskar Schlemmer, who carried his ideas about color into the Bauhaus. Komposition dates from 1915: loose shapes of blue, green, red, and white scattered across a warm orange ground, arranged by color and rhythm rather than by any subject. It's a glimpse of modern abstraction in the middle of being invented.

The warm orange ground brings real energy to a living room, studio, or office, and looks great against white, cream, or deep green walls. It pairs well with natural wood and other early abstracts, and works especially well in a black or oak frame.

About the Artist

Adolf Hölzel (1853–1934) was a German painter and theorist whose work arrived at abstraction before most had a word for it. He spent decades teaching at the Stuttgart Academy, where he developed a rigorous color and composition theory that shaped a generation of artists, among them Johannes Itten and Oskar Schlemmer. His own paintings moved steadily away from representation toward pure form and rhythm. He was more interested in what a picture did to the eye than what it depicted.
