About This Piece

Paul Klee painted Hardy Plants in 1934, his first full year back in Bern after leaving Germany. Dark, burr-like blooms sit on thin, wandering stems across a field of dusty rose and grey, with a small pale tree at the center. It reads less like a botanical study than a portrait of resilience: tough little plants holding their ground in soft, uncertain light. The original, oil on pulpboard, is in the collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Art.

The muted pink and grey palette works beautifully against warm whites, greige, and sage, and pairs naturally with linen, light wood, and brass. It's a quiet fit for a bedroom, entryway, or living room where you want texture and mood without strong color.

About the Artist

Paul Klee (1879–1940) was a Swiss-German painter and Bauhaus master who spent his career at the edge of what a picture could do. He drew equally from music, mathematics, color theory, and the drawings children make before they learn rules. He made over 9,000 works in his lifetime. He never made the same thing twice.
