About This Piece

In the 1920s Alexej von Jawlensky was living in Wiesbaden and showing his work with Kandinsky, Paul Klee, and Lyonel Feininger as the Blue Four. His paintings from these years became simpler and more meditative. In this Flower Still Life, a bouquet is reduced to soft blocks of pink, blue, and green on a warm cream ground, less a picture of flowers than a feeling of them.

The soft pinks and greens are fresh and gentle, perfect for a bedroom, nursery, kitchen, or entryway. It pairs beautifully with cream, blush, or sage walls and with light wood frames.

About the Artist

Alexej von Jawlensky (1864–1941) was a Russian-born painter who trained as a military officer before abandoning that life entirely for art. He landed in Munich in 1896 and spent decades in dialogue with Kandinsky, Matisse, and the German Expressionists, absorbing their color and pushing it further. His faces became more distilled with each decade, until they were almost icons. By the end of his life, arthritis had made painting difficult, so he worked smaller and smaller. He never stopped.
