About This Piece

Blue Night comes from Paul Klee's final years in Bern, where he returned in 1933 after the Nazis forced him out of his teaching post in Germany. Painted in 1937, despite the illness that shadowed his last years, it builds a night scene out of patchwork blues and violets crossed by heavy black lines that read like rooftops, arches, and lit windows seen from a hill at dusk. The original hangs in the Kunstmuseum Basel.

It brings depth to navy, slate, or cream walls and suits bedrooms, studies, and reading corners that want something calm without being quiet. On a gallery wall it anchors warmer abstracts, and it holds up beautifully at larger sizes, where the texture of the brushwork really shows.

About the Artist

Paul Klee (1879–1940) was a Swiss-German painter and Bauhaus master who spent his career at the edge of what a picture could do. He drew equally from music, mathematics, color theory, and the drawings children make before they learn rules. He made over 9,000 works in his lifetime. He never made the same thing twice.
