About This Piece

Hans Thuar was a Cologne painter who lost both legs in a streetcar accident at age eleven. His childhood friend August Macke encouraged him to become an artist, and the two sometimes painted the same subjects. Black Swans, from 1923, shows two swans with bright red beaks up close against an abstract background of green, blue, and pink, painted in bold, luminous color. Thuar's work was nearly forgotten for decades and is only now being rediscovered.

The rich greens, blues, and pinks make it a striking piece for a living room, study, or entryway. It looks beautiful against deep green or navy walls and pairs well with other animal and nature prints.
