About This Piece

Aristide Maillol began as a painter and tapestry designer and only turned to sculpture around age forty, but he became one of the great sculptors of the female figure. He never stopped drawing. In this 1931 crayon drawing, a reclining nude seems to glow as she emerges from a heavily worked dark ground on cream paper. Maillol's figures are calm, solid, and timeless, and this one has the same quiet weight as his sculptures in bronze.

The cream and charcoal tones are soft and versatile, ideal for bedrooms, bathrooms, and calm, neutral living spaces. It pairs beautifully with linen, plaster, and natural wood, and looks especially good in a thin black or brass frame.

About the Artist

Aristide Maillol (1861–1944) was a French sculptor and painter who spent the first half of his career making textiles and tapestries before turning almost exclusively to the human figure in bronze and stone. His sculptures are monumental without being aggressive. Women at rest, bodies that feel rooted and self-contained. He worked the same subject for decades, convinced that form and weight and stillness were enough. Matisse thought he was one of the great sculptors of the century. It is hard to argue.
