About This Piece

Franz Wilhelm Seiwert led the Cologne Progressives, a group of artists who tried to combine abstract, constructivist form with political ideas about everyday working life. Abstract Half-Figure, from 1920, reduces a figure to a large red oval overlapping a yellow arc, with a small orange circle where they meet, all set on a blue ground. The original, a small oil on cardboard, once belonged to his friend, the photographer August Sander.

The bold primary colors make it a great fit for an office, studio, kids' room, or modern living room. It pairs well with black frames, mid-century furniture, and other geometric and Bauhaus-style prints.

About the Artist

Franz Wilhelm Seiwert (1894–1933) was a German painter and graphic artist based in Cologne whose work was inseparable from his politics. He was a communist, and his figures show it: flat, schematic, stripped of individuality in a way that was entirely intentional. He co-founded the Cologne Progressives with Heinrich Hoerle and spent his short career making art that argued.
