About This Piece

Bathers were one of Pierre Bonnard's lifelong subjects, and for decades his model was his wife Marthe, painted again and again in the bath at their home in Le Cannet in the south of France. Woman in the Bathtub comes from 1942, late in his career, and shows a woman seated in the tub, arms wrapped around her knees, set against a patterned wall of warm yellow, blue, and white. It's quiet, private, and full of the glowing color Bonnard is loved for.

The warm yellows and soft blues make it a natural choice for a bathroom, bedroom, or dressing area. It looks lovely against white, butter yellow, or pale blue walls and pairs well with brass, rattan, and natural wood.

About the Artist

Pierre Bonnard (1867–1947) was a French painter and Nabis co-founder whose work grew increasingly private and chromatic as he aged. He and Marthe lived in relative seclusion in the south of France for much of his later life, and the house, the garden, and the bathroom became the recurring coordinates of his practice. He was still painting, and still revising finished canvases, in the final weeks of his life.
