About This Piece

Around 1916 Ernst Ludwig Kirchner made a series of ink studies of the Westhafen, Frankfurt's western harbor, while recovering at a sanatorium in nearby Königstein. Boats, buildings, and trees are dashed down in fast, nervous black line on a bold yellow ground, more an impression of a busy port than a careful record. The Städel Museum in Frankfurt holds his pen drawings of the harbor from this period.

The bright yellow ground adds instant energy to an office, kitchen, hallway, or kids' room. It pairs well with black frames and other graphic drawings, and works well in a gallery wall that needs a pop of color.

About the Artist

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938) was a German painter and printmaker who co-founded Die Brücke in Dresden in 1905, the group that ignited German Expressionism. He worked with angular, electric line and color pushed to places it had never been before. Street scenes, figures, interiors that crackle with urban energy. His woodcuts are among the most powerful prints of the twentieth century, direct and physical in a way oil paint rarely is. He spent his later years in the Swiss Alps, where his palette opened up and his work found a different kind of intensity.
