About This Piece

In 1908 Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was living in Dresden, painting with the young artists of Die Brücke and drawn again and again to the city's variety theaters, circuses, and dance halls. Variety Show captures one of those performances: dancers in pink and an acrobat balanced on a chair against a lush green backdrop, all quick brushwork and clashing color. It's an early look at the subject Kirchner returned to throughout his career: people performing, moving, and being watched.

The pink and green pairing is playful and bold, great for a dining room, powder room, bar corner, or creative studio. It looks especially good against white or blush walls and pairs well with brass, rattan, and other colorful expressionist prints.

About the Artist

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938) was a German painter and printmaker who co-founded Die Brücke in Dresden in 1905, the group that ignited German Expressionism. He worked with angular, electric line and color pushed to places it had never been before. Street scenes, figures, interiors that crackle with urban energy. His woodcuts are among the most powerful prints of the twentieth century, direct and physical in a way oil paint rarely is. He spent his later years in the Swiss Alps, where his palette opened up and his work found a different kind of intensity.
