About the Artist
Alice Bailly (1872–1938) was a Swiss painter who moved to Paris in 1906 and embedded herself in the avant-garde circle around Juan Gris, Francis Picabia, and Marie Laurencin. She worked across Cubism, Fauvism, and Futurism before inventing something entirely her own. When she returned to Switzerland at the start of World War I, she began making wool paintings, works built from short strands of colored yarn that functioned as brushstrokes. She made about fifty of them between 1913 and 1922. There is nothing else quite like them in the art of that period.
