About This Piece

Paul Klee painted The Man of Confusion in 1939, the year before his death and one of the most productive of his life, when he made more than a thousand works while living with a serious illness in Bern. On a deep red ground, a doll-like figure comes apart: a simple face, hands, and limbs float loose across bands of color, drawn in the childlike shorthand Klee loved. It's playful and unsettling at once. The original, oil and watercolor on jute, belongs to the Saint Louis Art Museum.

The saturated red makes it a confident statement piece for a hallway, office, or living room with neutral walls. It pairs well with black frames, mid-century furniture, and other bold modern prints, and holds its own as a single piece above a console or desk.

About the Artist

Paul Klee (1879–1940) was a Swiss-German painter and Bauhaus master who spent his career at the edge of what a picture could do. He drew equally from music, mathematics, color theory, and the drawings children make before they learn rules. He made over 9,000 works in his lifetime. He never made the same thing twice.
