About This Piece

In 1911 Wassily Kandinsky made a series of designs for the cover of Der Blaue Reiter, the almanac he edited with Franz Marc in Munich and published the following year. A white horse and rider charge across a red circle beneath a sweeping blue arch, with the title lettered in a flowing ribbon. The almanac gave its name to one of the most important artist groups of the century, and the rider became its emblem, a symbol of art pushing past the ordinary toward something more spiritual.

The red, blue, and white palette is bold but balanced, and it looks great in a living room, office, or creative workspace. It pairs well with black or natural wood frames and works as the anchor of a gallery wall of early modern prints.

About the Artist

Wassily Kandinsky (1866–1944) was a Russian painter and theorist who became one of the first artists to make fully abstract work. He came to painting late, abandoning a law career in his thirties after seeing a Monet haystack show in Moscow. He studied in Munich, taught at the Bauhaus, and wrote extensively about color and form as a language separate from representation. He believed painting could work the way music does, directly, without translation.
