About the Artist
Burkhard Mangold (1873–1950) was a Swiss painter, glass artist, and graphic designer from Basel who became one of the pioneers of modern Swiss poster art. He studied in Basel, traveled to Paris, and spent six years in Munich absorbing the German Art Nouveau poster tradition before returning home in 1900. His posters for the spa town of Davos became icons of Swiss advertising graphics. He worked across painting, glass design, book illustration, and decorative art with equal commitment, and his influence on Swiss visual culture in the first quarter of the twentieth century was substantial.
