About This Piece

In 1914 the Swiss designer Sebastian Oesch made this poster for the Lebensmittel-Verein Zürich, a Zurich food cooperative, advertising the fish market at its St. Annahof store. A bold blue fish curls over red seaweed on a cream ground, framed by Art Nouveau lettering. It comes from the golden age of the Swiss poster, when shops and brands hired real artists to make simple, striking images people would remember.

The blue, red, and cream palette is a natural fit for a kitchen, dining room, or coastal home. It pairs well with other vintage posters and food prints, and looks great in a simple black or natural wood frame.

About the Artist

Sebastian Oesch (1893–1920) was a Swiss painter, draftsman, and graphic artist from St. Gallen who trained as an embroidery draftsman before studying under Sophie Taeuber-Arp and others at the École des arts décoratifs. He traveled to Berlin, Weimar, Munich, and Paris, working physical labor at the Seine harbor to support himself while studying there. Back in Zurich he threw himself into lithography and produced posters considered among the most original in Swiss graphic art of the period.
