About This Piece

Edvard Munch made Sun Rays in the late 1920s, during his long final chapter at Ekely, his home outside Oslo. The sun was one of his great subjects, most famously in the huge mural he painted for the University of Oslo. Here it's reduced to almost nothing: a few delicate blue marks on an aged golden ground, cut by a single bold red line. It's a spare, intimate work from a painter better known for intensity, and that's exactly what makes it special.

The golden ground and sparse marks feel calm and modern, ideal for minimalist rooms, offices, and bedrooms. It pairs well with warm whites, natural wood, and black frames, and works beautifully next to other minimal abstracts.

About the Artist

Edvard Munch (1864–1944) was a Norwegian painter and printmaker whose work mapped the interior life with an intensity that influenced almost everything that came after it. He returned to the same subjects repeatedly. Anxiety, desire, grief, the body. As if painting them again might resolve something. His prints are as important as his paintings. He made over 700 of them, working in etching, lithography, and woodcut, and the woodcuts in particular have a rawness that feels completely contemporary.
