About This Piece

Oskar Moll was a German painter who helped found Henri Matisse's teaching academy in Paris and later ran the art academy in Breslau, until the Nazis dismissed him and confiscated his work as "degenerate." He painted Sea with Pine Branch in 1938, during those years of forced retreat. Looking down through green pine branches onto blue waves, with sailboats in the distance and a strip of sandy shore, it's bright and lively, a holiday view painted at a dark time.

The blues and greens are fresh and summery, ideal for coastal homes, bathrooms, and sunny living rooms. It pairs well with white walls, light wood, and other seaside prints.

About the Artist

Oskar Moll (1875–1947) was a German painter who taught himself to paint before studying under Lovis Corinth in Berlin. He moved to Paris in 1907, fell into the circle around Matisse, and was among the founders of the short-lived Académie Matisse alongside Hans Purrmann. That influence stayed in his work. His still lifes and landscapes are warm and color-forward, built on the lessons of Fauvism without being bound by them.
