About This Piece

Ludwig Ferdinand Graf was a Viennese painter and, from 1909, president of the Hagenbund, one of Vienna's most progressive artist groups. Influenced by Cézanne, he moved toward bold, expressive color. Rural Interior, from 1909, looks through a doorway into a yellow-walled country room with wooden plank floors, a blue painted cabinet, a pink towel, a striped chair, and lace curtains at the window. His work was largely forgotten until it was rediscovered in the 1990s.

The warm yellow and blue palette suits farmhouse, cottage, and eclectic interiors, especially kitchens, entryways, and bedrooms. It pairs beautifully with painted furniture, natural wood, and other interior scenes.

About the Artist

Ludwig Ferdinand Graf (1868–1932) was an Austrian painter who trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and the Académie Julian in Paris. He began working in an Impressionist mode before moving toward a more expressive, Cézanne-influenced style in his later years. He was a longtime member of the Hagenbund, eventually serving as its president, and his work was included in the art competition at the 1928 Summer Olympics. He came from a painting family. His father Ludwig Graf was a painter too.
