About This Piece

Mikuláš Galanda, one of the founders of modern Slovak art, was a gifted draftsman known for flowing, lyrical line. In Playing with a Ball, from 1930, a nude figure is drawn near the water in a single graceful line, with a sun overhead and little blue wave marks below. It's light, playful, and a little dreamlike, a summer day reduced to its simplest marks.

The warm ground and blue accents suit bathrooms, bedrooms, and coastal homes, and look great against white or sand-colored walls. It pairs well with other line drawings and minimal prints in a simple oak or black frame.

About the Artist

Mikuláš Galanda (1895–1938) was a Slovak painter and graphic artist who helped lay the foundation for modern art in Slovakia. He studied in Budapest and Prague, absorbing Expressionism and Czech modernism before bringing both back to a context that had almost no established avant-garde tradition. He worked across painting, illustration, and printmaking with equal focus. He died at 43, leaving behind a body of work that his country is still catching up to.
