About This Piece

In his later years Auguste Rodin, the most famous sculptor of his time, made thousands of drawings of models moving freely around his studio, often sketching without looking down at the paper and then adding washes of watercolor. This 1902 study of a crouching nude, in warm sepia wash on a near-white ground, has that same fluid, spontaneous energy. It feels less like a finished picture than a moment of movement caught in a few lines.

The warm sepia tones are soft and neutral, perfect for bedrooms, bathrooms, and calm living spaces. It pairs beautifully with linen, plaster, and natural wood, and works well alongside other figure drawings in a minimal gallery wall.

About the Artist

Auguste Rodin (1840–1917) was a French sculptor who brought the human figure back to life in bronze and marble after decades of academic convention had made it stiff. He worked from live models obsessively, building up surfaces that caught light the way skin does. The Thinker, The Kiss, The Gates of Hell, the works are so familiar it takes effort to see them again. His drawings are less known and worth the attention. Loose, rapid, made in a single sitting, they show the same understanding of the body without any of the monument.
