About This Piece

Night Feast dates from 1921, the year Paul Klee joined the Bauhaus in Weimar as a teacher. Under a dark, stippled sky scattered with stars, simple glowing houses, trees, and garden trellises gather along a line running across the middle of the picture, like a village lit up for a celebration after dark. Klee believed color carried its own weight, and here warm reds and greens glow against the night. The original is in the collection of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York.

Its deep, glowing palette suits dining rooms, dens, and moody painted walls in charcoal, forest green, or oxblood. It also makes a warm, unexpected piece for a kitchen or bar area, and pairs well with other Bauhaus and early modern prints.

About the Artist

Paul Klee (1879–1940) was a Swiss-German painter and Bauhaus master who spent his career at the edge of what a picture could do. He drew equally from music, mathematics, color theory, and the drawings children make before they learn rules. He made over 9,000 works in his lifetime. He never made the same thing twice.
