About This Piece

Alexej von Jawlensky was one of the boldest colorists of German Expressionism, and his landscapes treat color as emotion rather than description. In Landscape with Bridge, a blue river runs under a white bridge through patchwork fields of orange, red, and gold, with pink and mauve mountains beneath a moody purple sky. Nothing here is the color it would be in real life, and that's the point: it's a landscape painted the way it feels.

The warm oranges and cool purples make it a vibrant statement piece for a living room, dining room, or office. It looks great against white or deep plum walls and pairs well with other bold landscapes.

About the Artist

Alexej von Jawlensky (1864–1941) was a Russian-born painter who trained as a military officer before abandoning that life entirely for art. He landed in Munich in 1896 and spent decades in dialogue with Kandinsky, Matisse, and the German Expressionists, absorbing their color and pushing it further. His faces became more distilled with each decade, until they were almost icons. By the end of his life, arthritis had made painting difficult, so he worked smaller and smaller. He never stopped.
