About This Piece

Winold Reiss came to New York from Germany in 1913 and brought bold, modern design with him, creating some of the city's first truly modern interiors, including the Crillon restaurant in 1919. This study from that same year shows a formal dining hall with rows of white tables and blue chairs, paintings on pale walls, and a large gridded window, all drawn in blue line on a warm tan ground. It's a glimpse of modern design arriving in America.

The blue line and warm tan ground are crisp and architectural, perfect for an office, dining room, or design lover's home. It pairs well with black frames, mid-century furniture, and other architectural prints.

About the Artist

Winold Reiss (1886–1953) was a German-born American designer, illustrator, and portrait painter who trained in Munich before emigrating to New York in 1913. He became one of the most important visual chroniclers of the Harlem Renaissance, painting portraits of Black writers, artists, and intellectuals with a directness and dignity that was rare for the period. He worked across fine art, commercial design, and portraiture without treating any of them as lesser than the others.
