About This Piece

Édouard Vuillard was just in his early twenties in 1890, part of the young Paris circle of artists called the Nabis. Haystacks is a small, intimate pastel of two haystacks in a green field, built from layered, cross-hatched strokes of russet, green, and yellow under a purple-grey sky. It's a quiet look at the countryside from an artist who would become famous for his richly patterned interiors.

Its earthy greens and russets suit farmhouse, cottage, and traditional interiors, and look lovely against cream, sage, or warm white walls. It's a great choice for a kitchen, entryway, or study, and pairs naturally with other landscapes and botanicals.

About the Artist

Édouard Vuillard (1868–1940) was a French painter associated with the Nabis, the group of Post-Impressionist artists who believed a painting was first a flat surface covered in color, before it was anything else. He spent most of his career painting interiors, domestic scenes, women in rooms, patterns on wallpaper and fabric that almost swallow the figures within them. He rarely left Paris. He worked from the same world his whole life and kept finding new things in it.
