About This Piece

Léon Spilliaert spent most of his life in the Belgian seaside town of Ostend, and he is known for strange, quiet images with a dreamlike mood. In this 1912 work in pastel and colored pencil, five young girls stand in a row, their long hair, white bows, and white stockings repeating like a rhythm against a warm golden ground. Simple and flat, it feels both sweet and a little mysterious, which is exactly Spilliaert's gift.

The golden ground with blues and greens is warm and inviting, lovely in a girl's room, nursery, hallway, or reading nook. It pairs well with cream and soft green walls and with other storybook-like modern prints.

About the Artist

Léon Spilliaert (1881–1946) was a Belgian painter and draftsman who worked largely in isolation in Ostend, the coastal town where he was born and spent most of his life. He was self-taught and largely self-contained, producing work that has no clean category. Not Symbolist, not Expressionist, though it touches both. His drawings and watercolors deal in empty corridors, shorelines at night, and figures alone in rooms. He had insomnia and did much of his work in the small hours. The images feel like it.
