About This Piece

Juan Gris made Checkerboard and Playing Cards in 1915, at the height of his Synthetic Cubist period in Paris. A checkerboard, scattered playing cards, and a glass sit on a round table, broken into crisp planes of green, teal, red, and black. Gris built his pictures like architecture, and every shape here locks into place. The original, gouache, graphite, and resin on paper, belongs to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

The graphic shapes and jewel tones make it a natural fit for a game room, dining room, home bar, or office. It looks sharp in a black or brass frame and pairs well with mid-century and modern furniture.

About the Artist

Juan Gris (1887–1927) was a Spanish painter who moved to Paris at twenty-one and became one of the most rigorous minds in Cubism. Where Picasso and Braque worked intuitively, Gris built the picture as a structure first, then let the subject emerge from it. His still lifes are precise and quietly joyful, full of newspapers, wine glasses, and tabletops rendered in color that has no equivalent in nature. He died at thirty-nine. The body of work he left behind in that time is remarkably complete.
