About This Piece

Baubeginn im Garten translates to "Construction Begins in the Garden," and Paul Klee painted it in 1929, during his years teaching at the Bauhaus in Dessau. Dark cypress-like trees, a pale orange sun, and a dotted teal shrub sit on a dusty rose ground, while thin orange-red lines rise through the scene like the first beams of scaffolding. Garden and building start to grow into each other, a fitting subject for a painter working inside the most famous design school of the century.

The warm rose, rust, and teal palette suits terracotta, olive, and cream interiors, and it's lovely in a reading nook, entryway, or kitchen. It pairs especially well with natural wood frames and other earthy abstracts.

About the Artist

Paul Klee (1879–1940) was a Swiss-German painter and Bauhaus master who spent his career at the edge of what a picture could do. He drew equally from music, mathematics, color theory, and the drawings children make before they learn rules. He made over 9,000 works in his lifetime. He never made the same thing twice.
