About the Artist
Marsden Hartley (1877–1943) was an American painter from Maine who spent years moving between Europe and the United States, absorbing German Expressionism and Cubism before arriving at something entirely his own. He painted mountains, wrestlers, sailors, and the rocky coastline of his home state with the same blunt conviction. His German Officer paintings, made in Berlin after losing someone he loved in the war, are among the most quietly devastating works in American art. He always came back to Maine. The landscape there seemed to be the only thing big enough to hold what he was working out.
