About This Piece

After the strain of World War I, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner moved to the mountains above Davos, Switzerland, in 1917 and stayed for the rest of his life. The Alps became his new subject. Amselfluh is named for a peak near Davos, and Kirchner paints it in swirling purples and pinks, with a lone figure near a small blue pool and snowy summits beyond. It's a mountain landscape that feels alive and moving. The original is in the Kunstmuseum Basel.

The purple and pink palette brings real energy to a living room, bedroom, or mountain home, and looks beautiful against white, soft grey, or deep plum walls. Pair it with other landscapes on a gallery wall, or let it stand alone over a sofa or bed.

About the Artist

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938) was a German painter and printmaker who co-founded Die Brücke in Dresden in 1905, the group that ignited German Expressionism. He worked with angular, electric line and color pushed to places it had never been before. Street scenes, figures, interiors that crackle with urban energy. His woodcuts are among the most powerful prints of the twentieth century, direct and physical in a way oil paint rarely is. He spent his later years in the Swiss Alps, where his palette opened up and his work found a different kind of intensity.
