About the Artist
Frances Hodgkins (1869–1947) was a New Zealand painter who spent most of her adult life in Europe, moving between England, France, and Spain and developing a style that absorbed Post-Impressionism and modernism on her own terms. She was in her sixties before critical recognition caught up with her. Her still lifes and landscapes from the 1930s are loose and luminous, objects and interiors dissolving into color and light. She never settled in one place for long. The restlessness shows in the work, and it is not a flaw.
