About the Artist

Édouard Vuillard (1868–1940) was a French painter associated with the Nabis, the group of Post-Impressionist artists who believed a painting was first a flat surface covered in color, before it was anything else. He spent most of his career painting interiors, domestic scenes, women in rooms, patterns on wallpaper and fabric that almost swallow the figures within them. He rarely left Paris. He worked from the same world his whole life and kept finding new things in it.
